In support of the Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP), Dr. Duncan Bryant and Jessica Coleman HQUSACE participated in the NJ&EE STEM Challenge workshop on 17 June 2014 at the National Conference Center, Leesburg, VA. The purpose and goal of the two and half hour workshop was to reinforce the real-world application of multi-disciplinary STEM concepts and problem-solving, collaboration and creativity, professionalism and presentation skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The challenge focused on USACE’s role in managing our nation’s water infrastructure. The workshop description was, “Change the way you think about environmental engineering as you manage a river system in order to ensure the survivability of the local area endangered species, produce the required power by the hydropower units, manage flood risk, and provide the necessary water to the agricultural sector.” Seven students ranged from grades 6-9th, and consisted of students who placed first in their regional Ecybermission challenges. The scientific and engineering concepts taught in this challenge will feed into the broader societal discussion of managing our natural resources with the future leaders in the STEM arena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
