{"id":20986,"date":"2025-01-17T08:55:16","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T14:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ewn.erdc.dren.mil\/?post_type=publications&#038;p=20986"},"modified":"2025-01-17T08:55:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T14:55:17","slug":"strategic-planting-and-nutrient-amendments-to-accelerate-the-revegetation-of-rapidly-retreating-coastal-dunes","status":"publish","type":"publications","link":"https:\/\/ewn.erdc.dren.mil\/publications\/archive\/strategic-planting-and-nutrient-amendments-to-accelerate-the-revegetation-of-rapidly-retreating-coastal-dunes\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategic planting and nutrient amendments to accelerate the revegetation of rapidly retreating coastal dunes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The increasing frequency and severity of disturbances to coastal dune ecosystems requires developing and implementing restoration strategies that rapidly accelerate re-establishment of vegetation, enhance dune accretion, and ultimately preserve dune ecosystem services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To assess how to rapidly re-establish vegetation to counter ecosystem losses, we conducted a manipulative field experiment on a created foredune crest in Northeast Florida, USA to determine what combinations of planting density, outplant species composition, and nutrient addition maximize dune revegetation rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Above-ground biomass in densely planted plots with added nutrients was 4.7\u20137.3 times that of plots planted at conventional restoration densities after only 3 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critically, thickly vegetated, high-density plots with nutrient addition accreted 1\u20135\u2009cm more sediment after 3\u2009months and 7.5\u201322\u2009cm more sediment after 15\u2009months, demonstrating that this planting method can rapidly kickstart dune-building processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additionally, above- and below-ground biomass in densely planted, fertilized plots containing bitter panicum (<em>Panicum amarum<\/em>) were consistently higher and accreted more sand than similar plots planted with sea oats (<em>Uniola paniculata<\/em>), suggesting that planting schemes involving this early successional species may be most effective for rapid dune-building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Synthesis and applications<\/em>. Because coupling nutrient addition with dense planting can trigger self-sustaining, reinforcing plant growth and dune-building feedbacks within only months, this planting approach may help to enhance the long-term success of dune restoration projects.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"featured_media":20987,"template":"","tags":[60],"class_list":["post-20986","publications","type-publications","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
