Dr. Quirijn Lodder

Principal Advisor Coastal Flood Risk Management, Rijkswaterstaat

Bio

Quirijn Lodder is a principal advisor for Coastal Flood Risk Management at Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. In this role, he initiates and steers key research programs focused on the present and future adaptation of the Dutch coast to changing risks and rising sea levels. Drawing on scientific insights and practical experience, Lodder provides strategic advice to senior leadership within the Ministry, national flood‑risk management partners, and international organizations.

Internationally, his work centers on collaboration with coastal management authorities around the North Sea and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lodder is co‑author of the USACE international guideline on the use of Natural and Nature‑Based Features. Since 2012, Lodder has held a guest lectureship at Delft University of Technology, supervising MSc students working on coastal research and management. In 2019, Lodder completed a part‑time PhD on bridging science and policy in Dutch coastal flood‑risk management.

Lodder is also a member of the North Sea Coastal Management Group, an informal network of senior coastal‑management leaders dedicated to sharing knowledge and learning from one another’s approaches to challenges, such as climate‑change adaptation.
