Engineering With Nature on Capitol Hill

Purpose

In two events in March and April, information sessions on the topic of Natural Infrastructure: A Smart Investment were held for House and Senate staff and others. On 20 March 2019, the Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee sponsored the House information session, which was organized by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and included participation from Caterpillar, AECOM, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock, and USACE, which was represented by Dr. Todd Bridges, National Lead for the USACE EWN Initiative. On 11 April 2019, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee sponsored an information session on the same topic. During both sessions, short presentations by panel members were followed by a discussion period when attendees posed a range of questions regarding future opportunities for natural infrastructure, engineering and policy considerations, and follow-on actions. The attendees at the session were provided with copies of the EWN Strategic Plan, the recently published book Engineering With Nature: An Atlas, and other supporting materials. Positive discussion and feedback was offered during both sessions.
