Evelien Brand is a technical manager at Rijkswaterstaat, where she plays a key role in the national Coastal Maintenance Program (Kustlijnzorg). Evelien oversees the annual analysis of coastal monitoring data—covering more than 2,300 shoreline transects—and provides evidence‑based assessments to determine where sand nourishments are required to keep the Dutch coastline resilient and within its designated position.
Evelien’s work focuses on translating extensive coastal measurements into operational management decisions, including evaluating long‑term trends in coastal development, identifying erosion‑sensitive areas, and ensuring timely and effective intervention strategies.
Alongside her role at Rijkswaterstaat, Evelien has an academic background as a coastal researcher. She has contributed to over two dozen scientific publications, including work on hydrodynamic forcing, sediment transport, beach morphology, and the operational design of sand nourishments.
Her research spans both the Dutch and Belgian coasts, and she has collaborated with institutes such as the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and TU Delft. Her publication record includes operational overviews of Dutch sand nourishment practice and studies on the morphodynamics of macro‑tidal sandy beaches.
