Jeff King, PhD, PE

National Lead, USACE EWN Program

Bio

Dr. Jeffrey King is the national lead for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineering With Nature (EWN) Program stationed from the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory (ERDC EL). His primary focus is on leveraging the multifaceted capabilities of ERDC to deliver sustainable engineering solutions to USACE and the nation. With a wealth of experience, Dr. King previously served as the deputy national lead and program manager for EWN from 2016 to 2023.

In his current capacity, Dr. King spearheads a wide range of EWN efforts, providing vital support to the Department of Defense while advancing research and development tasks within the EWN portfolio. His research interests are focused on:

  • Pioneering the incorporation of EWN techniques and designs into traditional infrastructure paradigms.
  • Innovating the design and application of natural and nature-based features (NNBF).
  • Advocating for the integration of landscape architecture practices to enhance nature-based solutions.
  • Cultivating collaborative partnerships aimed at delivering innovative outcomes that adhere to the core principles of EWN.

Before joining ERDC and EWN, Dr. King held prominent roles including acting director and deputy director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, from 2011 through 2016. His prior experience also includes a significant tenure within the USACE Savannah District from 2004 to 2011, where he served within the Regulatory and Planning Divisions. Dr. King’s expertise further extends to roles as a research scientist with Westinghouse at the Savannah River National Laboratory and as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the University of Georgia Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

Dr. King earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in biochemistry from Florida State University, his Master of Science Degree in clinical and environmental toxicology from Johns Hopkins University, and his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Georgia and South Carolina.
