About the Study

This paper introduces and applies an adaptive management framework tailored to nature-based solutions (NBS) in densely developed coastal settings. This structured approach helps guide the planning, implementation, monitoring, and refinement of NBS projects where space, infrastructure, and ecological needs must be balanced.

Key Contributions

  • Offers a step-by-step framework for integrating and adapting NBS in urbanized coastlines.
  • Emphasizes the importance of monitoring, feedback loops, and stakeholder input to ensure effectiveness over time.
  • Provides practical tools for linking science and engineering practices with real-world management decisions.

Urban Focus

In highly developed coastal areas, applying nature-based solutions can be especially complex. This framework supports decision-makers by offering a method to evaluate trade-offs, document progress, and make iterative improvements that enhance both protective functions and ecosystem benefits.

Collaborative Effort

Developed through cross-sector collaboration, this work brings together expertise from coastal engineering, ecological science, and environmental planning—advancing shared knowledge on how to manage natural systems within urban infrastructure contexts.

We invite researchers, planners, and coastal practitioners to explore this publication and consider the value of adaptive, nature-based frameworks in their own projects.
