Site Characterization of a Restored Coastal Dune and Beach

About This Presentation

Dr. Brian Harris (ERDC-CHL) delivered an insightful presentation titled “Site Characterization of a Restored Coastal Dune and Beach” at the 7th International Conference on Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization (ISC) in Barcelona, Spain, from June 18-21, 2024. In collaboration with researchers from the United States, Australia, Canada, and Spain, Dr. Harris discussed the best geotechnical and geophysical methods for accurately capturing strength and stratigraphy characteristics in sensitive beach and dune systems across multiple sites. This research, conducted in partnership with the University of Florida and Villanova University, represents the first phase of an ongoing initiative funded by USACE’s Engineering With Nature(®) (EWN(®)) Program, aimed at enhancing our understanding of dune resiliency and improving coastal modeling efforts. Coastal dune vegetation is known to modify dune ecosystem response to wind, waves, and storms, but little focus has been given to understanding how vegetation, specifically belowground structures can enhance dune stab...
