Quantifying the Efficacy of Floating Vegetated Canopies for Shoreline Protection – September 2023 Research Update

Site shift

After multiple permit delays at Provincetown, MA, the team decided to leverage an existing partnership with MassPorts and selected a field site in East Boston for full network canopy deployment in Spring 2024. After a tedious process, full permits were granted for the experimental floating frame.

Prototype Canopies Deployed

In June 2023, the Emerald Tutu team deployed several new prototype configurations at the East Boston site, using inexpensive and locally-sourced biomass. The team will monitor species colonization, stability and resilience of the mats throughout the deployment.

Wave Buoy Deployment Preparation

Two Sofar Spotter buoys, mooring systems and a pressure sensor for water level measurements are being prepped for deployment to measure background and seasonal wave conditions. This will help enable an analysis of how much the full network deployment attenuates wave energy.

Literature Review

A comprehensive literature review was conducted focusing on different floating devices for wave attenuation and shoreline protection. In addition, literature was included using X-band radar to monitor wave attenuation.

X-Band Radar Installation at ERDC-FRF

The X-Band radar that will be deployed at the East Boston Site in Spring 2024 was installed at the ERDC-FRF (Duck, NC) in order to test and develop workflows, data collection and processing schemes, analysis products and determine tolerances to different environmental conditions (e.g., wind and rain).

Research Projects

This project will assess the efficacy of using vegetated floating canopies for shoreline protection. Vegetated floati...
