On March 1-3, 2016, USACE and NOAA-National Ocean Service held a collaboration workshop on the development and use of Natural and Nature-Based Features in Charleston, South Carolina. One of several follow-on actions resulting from this workshop was to conduct a collaboration meeting between USACE and NOAA-National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to identify opportunities to use the principles and practices of Engineering With Nature (EWN) to further the missions, projects and coordination/consultations undertaken by USACE and NOAA-NMFS. On October 4-5, 2016 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the USACE and NOAA-NMFS workshop on EWN was attended by 38 participants representing USACE (HQ, Engineer Research and Development Center, North Atlantic Division, New England District, New York District, Philadelphia District, Baltimore District, New Orleans District, Galveston District, Los Angles District) and NOAA (National Marine Fisheries Service-HQ, Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, Southeast Region Field Office, Coastal Zone Management, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, National Ocean Service). Participants included leadership at numerous levels, a variety of functional roles in USACE and NOAA, and a diversity of project and programmatic experience. Over two days, the participants gained a greater understanding of organization missions and opportunities to use EWN to develop solutions that are directly relevant to mission execution for USACE and NOAA-NMFS. The workshop included plenary and breakout group discussions designed to identify solutions and prioritize future actions.
