Dr. Kyle McKay presents Engineering With Nature as a Means to Jointly Advance Infrastructure and Conservation for the AEES Webinar Series

On November 14, 2024, Kyle McKay, PhD, PE presented for the American Ecological Engineering Society (AEES) Webinar Series. Dr. McKay is a researcher with the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Environmental Laboratory. His research focuses broadly on examining the ecological effects of water resources infrastructure with applications related to urban ecosystem restoration, ecological models, dam operations and decommisioning, and flood risk management.

This presentation focuses on infrastructure development and biodiversity conservation are often planned and executed in isolation. However, outcomes from these efforts are interlinked, with coordinated actions required to jointly address sustainability challenges. Natural infrastructure — encompassing a spectrum of natural to conventional solutions — is key to the infrastructure–biodiversity connection and should be brought into large-scale application. In the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Engineering With Nature initiative seeks to intentionally align natural and engineering processes to efficiently and sustainably deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits. This presentation will highlight ongoing research to mainstream the use of natural infrastructure in a variety of water resources applications.
