29 July 2018 – NNBF for Coastal Resilience hosted by International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE)

The US Army Corps of Engineers organized and conducted (July 29, 2018) a short course titled, “Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) for Coastal Resilience” in association with the International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland. The short course included a range of topics with a focus on current and emerging NNBF applications in coastal settings. Course lectures were offered by 14 speakers from a diverse set of organizations that are applying Engineering With Nature (EWN) practices in pursuit of enhanced coastal resilience.
A Novel Wave Attenuator: Wave Transmission Testing Results

Walter Marine and Atlantic Reefmaker entered into a testing service agreement with the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to perform wave transmission experimental testing on a novel wave attenuator product. This testing was meant to evaluate the reduction in wave height provided by the Reefmaker Ecosystems Wave Attenuator structure using a physical […]
Improving Coastal Resilience in One of North America’s Oldest Inhabited Settlements, Point Hope, Alaska

By Paula Whitfield & Leanne Poussard, NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science Background Jutting into the heart of the Chukchi Sea, 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle on the northwest coast of Alaska, is a gravel spit that is the site of one of the longest continuously inhabited village in the Americas. Twenty-five […]
Supporting Mission Resilience through Natural Infrastructure

Many of the challenges and opportunities that theDepartment of Defense (DOD) will face throughoutthe balance of the 21st century relate to building andsustaining the infrastructure needed for mission resilience. Currently, DOD and its 3 million team members operate on more than 25-million-acres and nearly 5,000 sites in different regions, climates, and landscapes in the United […]
Preserving History: Engineering With Nature® and the National Park Service

A multi-disciplinary, international coalition of partners has been assembled to leverage their expertise and resources to conduct research that informs potential options for use of natural and nature-based features to stabilize and mitigate the ongoing erosion at Saint Croix Island. The 6.5-acre, uninhabited island is the first known European settlement outside of Florida and is managed […]
The Role of Mangroves in Coastal Protection

Communities are challenged to develop sustainable, resilient adaptation strategies focused on coastal design alternatives that will allow these areas to mitigate the effects of coastal flooding. This EWN technical note reviews previous studies of mangroves as a nature-based adaptation for coastal protection and flood hazard mitigation. Additionally, the publication: provides a brief background on mangrove […]
Learning from Nature to Reduce Cost and Extend the Life of Infrastructure Projects

Dr. Todd Bridges as part of an international team of authors recently published an article in the journal One Earth. The authors make the case that investments in natural infrastructure will address multiple challenges facing countries around the world in a post COVID economy. The authors point out that we should take a lesson from […]
Technical Report: Water Level Management for Enhanced Fish and Wildlife Habitat in Upper MS River Navigation Pools

A new EWN® technical report is available, Water Level Management for Enhanced Fish and Wildlife Habitat Production in Upper Mississippi River Navigation Pools. This report describes projects successfully incorporating Engineering With Nature® principles in a review of the physical setting and historical fish and wildlife habitat management efforts using Upper Mississippi River System navigation dams. Several […]
On the Road With EWN: 5,547 miles

This summer, Dr. Todd Bridges was on the road visiting projects and sites across the country, meeting people, having conversations, and planting ideas. He shared the journey through pictures and videos on the webpage. Enjoy beautiful stops and thoughtful reflections on the mutual influence of people and nature on one another with a look towards […]
EWN Video: Long-Term Function of Coastal Islands Derived from Engineering With Nature Efforts

Regardless of their size, islands play a critical role in providing valuable habitat, recreation opportunities, and coastal protection by reducing erosion and wave energy to nearby shorelines. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is restoring and creating islands through the beneficial use of dredged sediment, which is increasing habitats and protecting nearby shorelines. The restoration […]
