Engineering With Nature Workshop

Multi-day Event (September 7-
8, 2011)

Purpose

Sponsored by the Dredging Operations Research (DOER) Program, the workshop was a conduit to share technical presentations, network, and to generate outcomes that will support the DOER program through and Engineering With Nature approach.

A workshop on “Engineering With Nature: Designing Navigation Infrastructure for Greater Environmental Sustainability” was held September 7-8, 2011, in Charleston, South Carolina. The goal of the workshop was to identify opportunities to advance science, engineering, and operational practice leading to expanded environmental benefits from navitagion infrastructure and operations within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) through in-depth discussions of relevant experiences, issues, and lessons learned.

Participants in the workshop were representatives from USACE Headquarters, USACE Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), academia, industry, and several USACE Districts including Chicago, Jacksonville, Mobile, New England, New Orleans, Seattle, and St. Louis.

During the 1.5-day workshop, 14 technical presentations (see below) were presented on a broad range of issues related to identifying, developing and quantifying environmental benefits associated with navigation, such as innovative engineering and operational practices, modeling, benefits quantification, and strategic communications. Each presenter was charged with introducing respective concepts, projects, efforts and achievements made.

On the second day of the workshop, participants were divided into three breakout groups to discuss specific questions related to the opportunities, gaps, and obstacles for implementing the EWN concept.
